The OWL League: Role-Play Policy & Guidelines

Updated: May 17, 2020

The goal of The OWL League is to provide a safe space to play for all players attending the event. Please read the following guidelines and ensure that you understand all policies placed forth.

Code of Conduct

Players and Adjudicators must remain respectful to all participants at all times. Any manner of bullying, harassment, and discrimination are not tolerated before, during, or after the game. Any comments or actions that are considered inappropriate or cause other players to feel emotionally unsafe will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Doing so can be grounds for removal from the game without a refund. Role playing is not an excuse.

All participants are expected to adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Participants should respect player boundaries including, but not limited to, text/verbal signals described below, player communication boundaries through the Discord server, Direct Message, or elsewhere, player engagement and time commitments.

  2. Messages and actions must remain respectful and kept civil.

  3. Please avoid swears and inappropriate content on the Discord Server and when interacting with others during the game.

  4. Players must not cheat by gaining information they shouldn't have access to. This includes gaining information from exploiting game technology vulnerabilities or sites. Please do not try to forcefully hack or exploit any technical systems.

  5. Players must respect Megagame Control and Officials. Officials have final say on any game and event rulings.

  6. This event will have an age recommendation of 18 years old or older. Parents/Guardians may contact Officials to request allowance for participants between the ages of 15 and 17. All requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

Tools for Safe Role-Play

We encourage open communication between all players and organizers to allow for all participants to make informed choices. The following are a set of tools that players are encouraged to sue

Speak with an Official

If for any reason a player feels unsafe or has a concern they should message an Official to assist in moderating the situation.

Signals

We will be following many of the guidelines for safe role-playing that have been put forth by the LARP community to encourage good communication between all participants. These signals will be used to communicate between participants when play needs to be stopped, paused, or can resume safely:

  • "CUT" / "X" - When a player says or types "CUT" all role-playing must stop immediately. Players involved must work to resolve conflict in cooperation with the signalling player. Similarly players may cross their hands in an "X" or raise an "X-card" in order to stop role-playing.

  • "BREAK" - "Break" is a signal to players that the current conversation is moving in a direction that the signalling player is not comfortable with. Players should look change the direction or reduce the intensity of the conversation as needed.

  • OK Check - Players may ask or signal to check that other participants are ok to continue under the current line of dialog. Players may then respond with verbal or written acknowledgement either confirming they are ok to proceed, saying "I'm not sure" or saying "I'm not okay."

Out-of-Character Channels

Channels in the "Out-of-Character" category will be used for players to remove themselves from any intense conversations or interactions. Please refrain from using these channels to discuss in-game activities.

Hang Up / Mute Channel

Players may remove themselves from any voice conversation or be asked to be removed from any text channel where they feel uncomfortable. Only they will determine when it is safe for them to return to play. Other players should respect those boundaries as they come up.
