Ludomancy

Updated: May 25, 2020

Ludomancy is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of six players each, compete with the primary objective of earning the most points by capturing various types of magical gems. It is played by approximately 1 billion magic users in over 200 countries and alternate realities, making it the world's most popular magical sport.

A game of Ludomancy is traditionally played in magically charged area across 3 designated paths, creating a Ludomancy Arena. Both teams select six players, known as Magicians, to travel across one of the three paths to find and charge gems to capture. The act of magical play causes gems in the area to become empowered with magic. Magicians from opposing teams on the same path will then compete to capture these gems. Points are awarded based on the rarity of captured gems by each team's magicians. The team with the highest point total after all gems are captured is the winner.

Rules & Regulations

Rules described here are based on the 2020 rule-set defined by the OWL League.

At the start of a match of Ludomancy, Magicians divide themselves into parties that will traverse one of three paths in a Ludomancy Arena. Opposing parties on the same path then enter into a magical duel, called a Ludo Duello. In doing so, the gems nearest to the path the duel takes place will become imbued with magic and become attracted to the dueling parties. Magicians may then capture gems that appear to their side of the duel.

In addition to the rules of Ludo Duello, the OWL League has magically charmed Ludomancy Arenas to follow the guidelines:

  1. Arenas are limited to 3 paths

  2. Each path will have between 1 and 3 gems that can be captured for points.

  3. Teams may only field a maximum of 6 magicians during a match

  4. Each magician may only be a part of one party, and therefore can only traverse one path per match

  5. A party may consist of any number of magicians

  6. Teams may omit to field a party on any paths they choose.

Scoring

OWL-charmed arenas are also setup so that Gems will follow these rules for capture:

  • The highest value gem on a path will be awarded to the party with the highest total Stars

  • If a 2nd gem is on a path, it will be awarded to the party with the highest total Heart.

  • If a 3rd gem is on a path, it will be awarded to the magician with the highest individual AQR(lower number is better).

  • If a party arrives at a path unopposed all gems on that path are awarded to that party

  • If no party is assigned to the path by either team, gems on that path will not be empowered and therefore will award no points to either team.

If teams are still tied after all crystals are scored, the team that has Astrological Favor will be considered the winner.

Gem Values

Gems are scored by their rarity and are placed in one of three scoring categories:

Stars

A Magician's Star Value during a match is determined by the following:

Magician's Star Value + Magician's Gifts - Magician's Curses = Magician's Match Star Value

Ties

When determining which team is awarded gems, ties are broken in the following order:

  1. In the event of a tie for Most Stars, the party with the highest total Heart will break the tie.

  2. If a tie still exists the team that has Astrological Favor that day will be considered the highest.

General Strategy

A common strategy employed by Head Sages of Ludomancy Teams are to ensure that magicians are assigned to paths that they are proficient in traversing. This will ensure that magicians will not become cursed by being on a path type they are not comfortable with.

Winning at least one Gem on every path is very important. Hearts are not affected by Gifts or Curses so you may be able to win at least one Gem, even if all of your Magicians are Cursed. Alternatively, trying to guarantee winning all gems on one path will often provide enough points to keep a match close.

Governing Bodies

The primary governing body of ludomancy is the Parliament of Occult & Witchcraft in Ludomancy. Parliament headquarters is located in New York City, NY, USA under the abandoned City Hall Train Station.
